Q&A with Alumna Kinley Searcy Rodden

Shortly after earning her Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree from Baylor University, Kinley Searcy Rodden, PT, DPT ’23, became certified in vestibular rehabilitation and concussion therapy by the American Institute of Balance. She also felt a strong desire to give back to Baylor, so now she serves as a Clinical Education Instructor (CI), mentoring and leading current DPT students in their clinical rotation. In this Q&A, Kinley shares her journey after Baylor’s hybrid physical therapy education program and her experience as a CI.

What is your current role?

I am currently an acute care therapist at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Waco. When needed, I float to inpatient rehab and work with outpatient joint replacement patients at our outpatient surgery center.  

How did Baylor’s DPT program prepare you for your professional career? 

I felt like I gained a very good foundation in anatomy and physiology, as well as with hands-on training from lab immersions regarding transfers and gait training. I appreciate the emphasis that Baylor puts on keeping an eye out for red flags during patient care because it has definitely helped me during my time in acute care.  

What has been a favorite experience or surprise while serving as a CI? 

I did not expect for this to be as valuable of an experience as it was! I have learned a lot about myself, and it challenges me as a clinician. It has forced me to look at things from a different perspective than what I normally do.

What advice would you give to someone who is considering becoming a CI? 

Don’t doubt yourself—and just take the leap of mentoring a student! You know more than you think you do, and it’s very rewarding to pour into the future of the profession!
