James Castillo
Class of 2026
After graduating in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Human Sciences from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, James Castillo “sought the Lord and prayed that He would lead [him] into a career that would glorify Him.” His prayers for guidance led him to Baylor University’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program, from which he graduated in December 2024. Castillo is grateful for how the Baylor program has allowed him to both develop his physical therapy expertise while also encouraging him to integrate his faith and experiences to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
“I believe an orthopedic residency would help enhance my knowledge and skills to be the best therapist that my patients need me to be,” Castillo said. “As I desire to let all my work be done unto the Lord, I desire to not just become an average therapist, but to learn under board certified professionals who can help me serve my patients in the most effective ways possible.”
Julia Hunnell
Class of 2026
A two-time Baylor and Robbins College of Health and Human Sciences graduate, Julia Hunnell received her Bachelor of Science in Health Science Studies in 2022 and graduated from Baylor’s DPT program in December 2024. She chose to return to pursue her graduate degree “after experiencing the high-quality education, Christian values, and top-notch faculty at Baylor.” Hunnell is originally from Fort Worth, Texas.
“Throughout clinical experiences, I have developed a passion for helping patients recover from various orthopedic conditions by creating individualized treatment plans based on patient goals,” she said. “I am excited for the opportunity to further grow my clinical skills through mentorship, gain teaching experience at lab immersions, and become involved with research through the Baylor Scott and White-Baylor Orthopedic Residency Program.”
Emily Lapes
Class of 2025
Emily Lapes is a graduate of the Baylor DPT program. She is a Waco native who completed her undergraduate degree at Baylor as well.
"Having now been a part of the Baylor DPT program, it is safe to say Baylor is family and Waco is home. I am eager to continue to develop my knowledge and skills through the Baylor Scott and White-Baylor Orthopedic Residency Program. This program creates an opportunity to grow in so many ways that will allow me to be more impactful to the community. Through this residency I am so excited to continue to serve and care for the Waco community I call home."
Jonathan Kim
Class of 2025
Originally from Los Angeles, Jonathan Kim received his undergraduate degree in Economics. After graduation, he worked as an account manager for four years before returning to school to pursue a career in physical therapy. He graduated from Baylor's Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program in December 2023.
"Baylor's DPT program has influenced me in many ways—one of those was introducing me to residency programs. Now, I have the exciting opportunity to embark on my journey to become an orthopedic clinical specialist with the Baylor Orthopedic Residency!"
Mason Scholtzhauer
Class of 2024
Originally from Missouri, Mason Schlotzhauer had a passion for physical therapy from a young age. After graduating from Missouri Valley College with a degree in Exercise Science, he married his wife, Noelle, and moved to Texas. He recently earned his DPT from Baylor University, where he spent his last several weeks of clinical rotations with TMI Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery.
"I am excited to continue my journey with Baylor University through Baylor Scott & White - Baylor University Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency. Through exceptional clinical mentorship and faculty, I am looking forward to expanding my skills and clinical reasoning while exploring the academic and research opportunities within the residency. I believe this residency is the next step to becoming the clinician I aspires to be."
Jacob Bevell
Class of 2024
Jacob Bevell was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV and has always enjoyed sports and family time. He served a 2-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he learned to love serving anyone and everyone in any capacity that he can. Mr. Bevell received his bachelor's degree in exercise science at BYU and then attended Baylor University for his DPT. During his downtime, he loves to spend time with his wife, Erica, and daughter, Lively.
"What excites me most about being a part of this residency program is to continue to learn from some of the best in our field in treating orthopedic conditions. I strongly believe that the mentorship and leadership associated with the program will help me elevate my patient care above what I can do on my own. I am also looking forward to the opportunity to be a part of the team, teaching at the lab immersions that I know from experience are so important! Ultimately, I am excited to increase my ability and capacity to treat the wide range of patients that deal with orthopedic conditions and help them understand the amazing power that is movement."
Dr. Tyler Fleck
Class of 2023
Dr. Tyler Fleck attended Eastern Illinois University to achieve his bachelor's degree in Exercise Science and subsequently obtained his CSCS through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He went on to complete a strength and conditioning internship at the Under Armour Performance Center in Baltimore, Maryland where he gained experience working with various levels of athletes including NFL players from the Carolina Panthers. He then went on to obtain his Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Washington University in St. Louis, completing primarily orthopaedic and sports clinical rotations.
"What excites me about being part of the Baylor Scott & White + Baylor University Orthopaedic Physical Therapy Residency is having the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with established experts in the field through the Baylor University DPT program. I am also looking forward to the clinical mentorship component of this program to gain experience treating a wide variety of orthopaedic conditions. Ultimately by specializing in orthopaedics I aim to pursue my passion of working with barbell athletes and other individuals with orthopaedic injuries to dispel nocebic narratives and facilitate greater self-efficacy by promoting the resilience of the human body."
Dr. Hannah Lewis
Class of 2023
Dr. Hannah Lewis was born and raised in Delaware where she grew to love the beach and Philadelphia sports teams. She moved to Virginia for undergrad where she graduated in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in Exercise Science, and in 2021 with a doctorate in Physical Therapy. Hannah has called Waco home since 2020. In her free time, Hannah enjoys spending time with her husband, Austin, and daughter, Harper.
"What excites me about being a part of the orthopedic residency at Baylor is knowing that I will be able to strengthen and refine my ability to assess and treat patients in the area of practice that I am most passionate about- orthopedics! I am looking forward to learning from and working with such a well-respected faculty, and having the opportunity to meet and teach Baylor's PT students."
